openHASP: build a touchscreen wall panel for Home Assistant from a cheap ESP32 display

Gadget, Medium

Open firmware that turns a commodity ESP32 touch display into a customizable control panel for your smart home, talking to Home Assistant or anything else over MQTT.

openHASP lets you design your own touchscreen layout (switches, covers, a media player) and control home-automation devices from it over MQTT. It's a rewrite of the HASwitchPlate sketch. The older version needed a Nextion display, and openHASP drops that by drawing the UI with LVGL on the microcontroller, so it runs on ordinary ESP32 and STM32F4 boards with a display attached.

The docs list supported boards by maker. They include the Sunton ESP32-2432S028 (the Cheap Yellow Display), the Guition JC2432W328 and JC8048W550, the Wireless-Tag WT32-SC01 Plus, Espressif's ESP32-S3-BOX and the M5Stack Core2.

Hardware & cost: One of the supported ESP32 touch displays and an MQTT broker, usually the one in your Home Assistant install. MIT licensed.

Difficulty: Medium. Flashing is quick. Most of the time goes into designing pages and wiring them to your devices.

Agent install prompt (paste into Claude Code, Cursor or Codex): "Read the openHASP docs at https://www.openhasp.com/ and check that my board is on the supported hardware list. Then write a pages.jsonl with one page of light switches for my living room, using only objects the docs describe."

Ideas to try with it

Our ideas, not the builder's claims.

  1. Add a page with buttons that trigger your agent's routines
  2. Show your robot vacuum's status and a start button by the door
  3. Mount one by the bed with a single all-lights-off button
