Bring a secondhand Anki Vector back to life with wire-pod

Desk, Easy

wire-pod is free server software for the Anki Vector robot. It runs on your own computer, makes every voice command work again without Digital Dream Labs' servers, and can send questions to OpenAI, Together or a local Ollama model.

Vector is the small tracked desk robot Anki sold before the company shut down. Digital Dream Labs later open-sourced its voice server code, and wire-pod is built on that. Install it on a Linux, Windows or macOS machine (x86_64 or aarch64), sign your robot in, and every voice command works again with no fee and no DDL account. It works with Vector 1.0 and 2.0, including robots that were never unlocked.

For questions, wire-pod can use Houndify, OpenAI, Together or Ollama. With OpenAI or Together it can send anything that isn't a built-in command straight to the model. It also supports custom commands, and a web app on port 8080 replaces the Vector phone app. Robots signed in to wire-pod keep working with the Vector Python SDK.

Production robots need firmware 1.8 or 2.0.1. The install guide is on the project wiki.

Ideas to try with it

Our ideas, not the builder's claims.

  1. Ask Vector a question and have a local Ollama model answer
  2. Add a custom command that tells you if the 3D printer is done
  3. Pick up a used Vector cheap and get it talking again in an afternoon
1 more idea
  1. Write a Python SDK script that has Vector greet you when you sit down
