Cat TV: a Raspberry Pi that projects scenes for a cat
Gadget, Easy
A Raspberry Pi renders cat-friendly scenes (laser dots, birds, fish, fireflies) and streams them over AirPlay to a Samsung Freestyle projector, with a phone controller for scene, color, speed and projector power.
behr's cat kept trying to jump into the TV, so he built the cat his own. The Raspberry Pi renders the scenes locally, from a twitchy laser pointer and birds to fish, fireflies, calm animations, generative art and custom GIFs. It streams them to a Samsung Freestyle projector over AirPlay using an adapted version of the Doubletake Linux screen-mirroring sender.
A controller microsite on the Pi switches scenes, changes color, speed, size and brightness, shows a live preview and turns the projector on and off. It's also hooked into the builder's dot assistant for reminders and scene changes. Codex wrote the scenes and helped adapt the streaming software. The post doesn't link any code.
Ideas to try with it
Our ideas, not the builder's claims.
- Schedule a laser-dot session while you're at work
- Point the projector at the floor for a chase game
- Pair it with a pet camera so you can watch the cat watch
