Follow-me with a cheap USB camera

Person detection drives a soft chase controller so your robot tags along through the apartment without bowling over chairs.

Platforms

  • turtlebot3
  • turtlebot4
  • yahboom-ros2
  • pi-diy-diff

Safety

  • Max linear 0.25 m/s, max angular 0.8 rad/s
  • Stop if person lost > 2s
  • Clear floor; spotter required

Follow-me with a USB camera

Goal: Keep a detected person centered and maintain a soft follow distance.

Hardware checklist

  • [ ] Differential-drive robot with cmd_vel
  • [ ] Forward camera at ~1m height if possible
  • [ ] Clear indoor path for testing
  • [ ] Spotter with e-stop

30-minute path

  1. Verify /camera/image_raw (or USB /dev/video0 via v4l).
  2. Run MediaPipe pose/person; draw bbox centroid.
  3. Map horizontal error → angular.z; bbox size → linear.x (deadzones!).
  4. Cap speeds; stop if no detection for 2 seconds.
  5. Walk slowly in a hallway; tune gains until smooth.

Safety

  • No outdoor roads, no stairs, no pets as targets for v0.
  • Unitree Go: only if you already understand sport-mode velocity limits — not this kit's default path.
